[ THE DAY ]

STAY FOR THE LIGHT

St Francis Bay runs on a clock nobody wrote down. The boats come in before the birds. The wind gets up after lunch and has its say. And then, around six, the whole place stops what it is doing and turns to face the same direction.

Five hours. Five sounds. Come as you are.

First light

Seal Point's light is still turning when the sky starts. For an hour, the whole bay is yours.

Placeholder: flat grey sea at first light

Flat grey water and the first birds sorting themselves out. The lighthouse blinks its last few before the sun takes over. Walk the beach now and yours are the only footprints on it — by nine, nobody will believe you.

What it sounds like

Before anyone's up

Synthesised placeholder — to be replaced by a field recording at first light on the bay.

The sticker

Seal Point

Seal Point lighthouse, Cape St Francis — the tallest masonry lighthouse on the South African coast. It has been working this shift far longer than anyone in town.

[ SECOND ] [ HOUR ]

The point

A right-hander so good a film crew called it perfect in 1966 and went home happy. It is still there.

The wave does the same thing it has always done, whether or not anybody paddles out for it. Some mornings there are twelve people on it. Some mornings there is one. Both are fine.

What it sounds like

A right-hander, still going

Synthesised placeholder — to be replaced by a field recording at the point.

The point

Bruce's Beauties. The Endless Summer, 1966 — the only time this brand appeals to outside authority, and it only does it once.

[ THIRD ] [ HOUR ]

The wind

It gets up after lunch and everyone stops pretending it will not. You learn to plan around it, and then you stop planning.

Thatch first, then the milkwoods, then the flags at the ski-boat club going straight out. Hats come off. Somebody's washing ends up in the neighbour's yard and is returned without comment. By four it has usually said what it came to say.

What it sounds like

It never really stops

Synthesised placeholder — to be replaced by a field recording, thatch and fynbos.

Wind

White walls, black thatch — the town's building code, and the reason the palette was never invented. The wind is the local joke everybody is already in on.

The canals

4 of 5

[ FOURTH ] [ HOUR ]

The canals

Water right up to the lawn, on one of the very few canal networks in Africa. It goes flat and quiet late in the afternoon.

Placeholder: low sun across flat water

A ski-boat idling home. Halyards ticking against somebody's mast. Water slapping a jetty in no particular rhythm. Someone waves at you from a stoep without knowing you, and you wave back, which is roughly how the whole place works.

What it sounds like

Water against a jetty

Synthesised placeholder — to be replaced by a field recording on the canals.

Canals

The Kromme runs into the bay and the canals run off it. Almost nowhere else on the continent is laid out like this.

Six o'clock

Around six, the sun does something here that nobody has ever properly described. So we stopped trying and started pouring sundowners instead.

Nobody's counting

Synthesised placeholder — to be replaced by a field recording at the good hour.
